Tips On How to Avoid Scams
Be skeptical of urgent problems or sudden prizes:
If you get a call about a sudden problem(a missed bill, back tax, etc. and haven't heard of it prior, be alert. If you get a call about unexpected prizes or all-inclusive vacation, often times it's a scammer and they may even ask for a "small fee" to claim winnings.
Avoid oversharing personal details online:
Scammers want to build your trust. They will often pretend to be from a government agency such as Apple, Amazon, or local utility companies. These imposter scammers often have specific, personal details to make them legitimate. Never give out your credit card # or social security numbers.
BONUS TIP:
Register your number at donotcall.gov. Within a month of submission, all legitimate businesses should stop calling. Scammers will still use the number, but you can assume any unknown calls are not legitimate
